Predestination; a snake biting it’s own tail

Ever enjoyed being confused?

Yes, you heard it right. It’s time for some guessing, confusion and science fiction. I am talking about nothing other than time travel!

A concept widely in Hollywood movies that even other language industries now hesitate to use, saying it’s a ‘used up’ plot. In this movie, it is brought back with some perk: Predestination(2015).

Confusion is something the entire humanity hates. From the beginning of times, humans have been seeking answers of confusions. Sci-fi movies or shows with time travel are genetically designed to be confusing. I also hated lot of confusing stuff, one of the reasons for giving up the German Netflix show ‘Dark’, which had lot of travelling through time. Needless to say, it bored me.

Written and directed by Spierig brothers based on the short story “All You Zombies”, written by Robert A.Heinlin and published in 1959 issue of the fantasy and science fiction magazine. Predestination is a spectacular work dealing with perfect ratios of emotions, love and hatred. The mental distress due to jumps through time is just perfectly showcased.

Ethan Hawke works as an agent for a covert society which uses time traveling for saving people from massive destructions. The society

brings me to the thought of “umbrella academy”, the Netflix show which has similar society. The society depicted in the movie Predestination is perfect for me. Ethan works undercover as a barkeep and talks to a man betting on a full bottle saying that he’ll get to hear the most fabulous story in his bar keeping career. The flashback or the story of the man engages us in the first half of the movie, which then paces up to showcase the confusing experience of time jumps.

What I enjoyed the most is the paradox illustrated across the movie, which is more crackable than the several others I have seen. Even a first timer to sci-fi genre can understand the story, but the movie does not compromise on its brilliance. More peak into the story will obviously be a spoiler. But I should say, there’s a drunkard at the bar playing the same song over and over again in the jukebox “I’m my own grandpa…” .
