5 Must watch Space Movies

Updated: Dec 7, 2020

So everyone was busy with space week earlier this month , and I felt that this might be a good time to write cinema-stuff. There are a lot of reasons why you may start watching some space movies all of a sudden. For a brief period you may be trying to forget all your horrible earthly problems, or you could be be excited for some Out-of-the-world drama. In any case some of these movies are already very popular and so if you have watched all of these movies , kudos to you. But for those of you who are still ALIEN to to the world of space movies, here I am with a list of 5 MUST WATCH SPACE MOVIES.

*************************************No SPOILERS*****************************************

5. CONTACT (1997)

For starters, Contact (1997) is a space movie starring McConaughey. The movie is based on Carl Sagan's novel and has Jodie Foster as Dr. Ellie Arroway. The young radio scientist is on a mission to find the truth behind what is thought to be the first evidence of human contact with extra-terrestrial life. The scene where she detects some radio signals and calls for support is simply hair-raising. But I must warn that it might disappoint you towards the end.

4. APOLLO 13 (1995)

Tom Hanks is another actor you will never get bored watching.

Apollo 13, the docu-drama tells the story of Nasa's stranded spacecraft and the efforts made to save the three men onboard. The built up is slow and steady . Considering the time of its release, Apollo 13 has to be applauded for its technical and visual quality(remember, this is the oldest movie in the list).

3. GRAVITY (2013)

The most appropriate description for Gravity (2013) will be-'Visually Stunning'. There are some really powerful yet realistic scenes in this movie. When it comes to space movies you cannot go wrong with special effects and that is where most movies fall flat; well, not Gravity. Unlike the fancy stuff that Indian cinema sells us as visual treats, this film makes the correct usage of technology and practical effects to pull off the impossible. Indian movies have a lot to learn from the movie's Oscar winning visual effects.

2. THE MARTIAN (2015)

In The Martian, Matt Damon plays Mark Wattney,-an astronaut presumed to be dead by his fellow crewmates ,get stranded on the red planet and has to survive on harsh conditions, as the others try tirelessly to rescue him. Its an astronaut's worst nightmare, but an engaging watch for us folks.

1. INTERSTELLAR(2014)

Who else to do it, if not Christopher Nolan! I am not going to make any comments on this movie, Interstellar (2014). Just watch it if you haven't yet!
